Born to Die fue lanzado el 27 de enero de 2012 en Irlanda,29 el 30 de enero de 2012 en el Reino Unido y el 31 de enero en el resto del mundo.
En el Reino Unido el álbum debutó en el número uno, vendiendo 117.000 copias en su primera semana.
En Estados Unidos, Born to Die vendió 77 000 copias en su semana de lanzamiento, debutando en la segunda posición del Billboard 200.
Born to Die recibió críticas generalmente favorables por parte de los críticos profesionales, según Metacritic. Para promocionar el álbum, Del Rey se presentó en Saturday Night Live el 14 de enero de 2012, en general recibiendo críticas mixtas por su presentación.
Durante 2012, Born to Die vendió 3.400.000 copias a nivel mundial, con las cuales se convirtió en el quinto álbum más vendido durante aquel año.
La mano izquierda de Lana tiene tatuadas una «M», en referencia a su abuela Madeleine, y la palabra «paradise». Su mano derecha está tatuada con la frase «trust no one.»
También tiene tatuada la frase «die young» en el dedo anular derecho.
